HOW WE WORK WITH YOU
The first consultation will typically be 45-60 mins. We will deep-dive into your health history and available laboratory work in order to fully understand the genesis of your symptoms and goals.
As a result of the first consultation, you will have detailed next steps including food guidelines, supplements (if applicable), and notes for your Primary Care Physician (if applicable). We will order any relevant laboratory testing also as a follow-up (blood chemistry, stool, urine, saliva, breath tests).
Our follow-up sessions are 30 minutes and will be geared towards evaluating your progress and making any necessary adjustments to your nutrition plan.
The consultations are held via phone call and/or video, or can also be held in-person if you are located in Washington DC area/Northern Virginia, NYC or Beverly, Mass.
EMPHASIS ON GUT HEALTH
70% of the human immune system resides in the gastrointestinal tract.
The standard American lifestyle is burdened with processed foods, refined carbohydrates, added sugars, and pharmaceutical medications. These things together have contributed to an epidemic of gut microbial dysbiosis. The trillions of microbes living in the gut are tasked with protecting and fostering the immune system, yet can easily become outnumbered by unfriendly bacteria and fungi. These unfriendly gut microbes feed off of the very sugar and chemicals commonly found in the standard American diet.
This shift in gut ecology causes the gastrointestinal tract to become permeable, meaning undigested food particles and other digestive byproducts can 'leak' out into the bloodstream. This phenomenon (also known as "leaky gut") opens the door to a number of ailments including weight gain, gastrointestinal discomfort, heartburn, fatigue, headaches, detoxification issues, and chronic conditions such as autoimmune disease.
A core concept at Functional Nutrition NYC is that rebalancing the gut microbiome is critical to achieving full-body health. Therefor optimizing gut health is key, whatever your goal may be.
